Understanding Sahl Hasheesh Old Town

Sahl Hasheesh Old Town is a modern quarter in a planned Red Sea development south of Hurghada. The name belongs to the waterfront district rather than to an ancient town. Its promenade, central pier and Sunken City can be understood together: a modern shore setting, with designed structures under water rather than the remains of a lost historical settlement. That distinction makes the visit easier to picture before you arrive.

Approach the area as a waterfront visit rather than an archaeological itinerary. Separate a walk around the quarter from using a beach or entering the water, because each has its own access arrangements. If swimming is part of your plan, read the beach guide alongside this page. For choosing a base near the waterfront or in a separate residential area, see where to stay in Sahl Hasheesh.

History and modern architecture

The developer’s historical chronology starts with land acquisition in 1995. Concept work and master planning fall within 1996 to 1997, while the infrastructure works begin within the period 1999 to 2003. The same chronology places the first hotel operations in 2008 to 2009 and the first Old Town tenant in 2010 to 2012. These are development periods, so they are useful for understanding the sequence rather than pinpointing a single opening day.

That history explains the district name and architectural setting. Old Town belongs to the modern development of the bay; its buildings should be read as part of that planned place. Older project descriptions present the quarter with shops, restaurants and cafés on the promenade. Use that to understand the intended relationship between buildings and shore, while choosing particular stops around their current opening arrangements. Old development plans are not a timetable for today’s visit.

Sahl Hasheesh Sunken City

Sunken City consists of modern columns, designed façades and pharaonic-style sculptures off the Old Town marina. Its interest lies in the constructed underwater setting. It is not an ancient excavation or a historical city submerged here. Keeping that distinction in mind lets you appreciate the design without attaching an invented archaeological story to what you see.

Plan the waterfront visit and any water activity separately. Ask locally about current access to the specific area and the entry arrangements for the activity you want. A view of the pier does not itself decide whether you may use a particular water entry. For an outing focused on underwater scenery, the snorkeling guide explains the difference between shore access and guided boat stops, without treating a reef excursion as a Sunken City visit.

The central pier and private jetties

The central pier is a landmark to distinguish from private hotel and diving jetties around the bay. The word pier may be used loosely in conversation, so name the specific place when discussing a meeting point or access. This is particularly useful if you are arranging a water activity: the location of a jetty, the permission to use it and the point where an excursion starts are separate details.

A hotel pickup in Sahl Hasheesh also does not identify the central pier as a boat’s starting point. Keep a waterfront walk and an organised excursion as distinct parts of your plan, with the actual meeting instructions for each. The boat trips guide helps compare excursion formats, while getting there focuses on arrival and transfers to your accommodation.

Things to do in Sahl Hasheesh

Build a visit around the waterfront quarter, its modern architecture and the relationship between promenade and sea. Leave room for a café or shopping stop according to what is operating when you visit, instead of assigning fixed hours to the entire district. If an evening visit appeals, establish access and the opening arrangements of the places you want to use; choose the actual stops before organising transport around them.

For a more active day, decide whether the emphasis is a beach session, guided snorkeling or a boat outing. Each offers a different use of the coast, and the quarter itself can remain a separate part of the day. When entering the marine environment, do not touch or stand on coral, take coral pieces or shells, or disturb marine animals. Dispose of rubbish properly, keeping the shore and underwater habitat part of the same visit.
